Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) in Los Angeles

How Roux-en-Y gastric bypass works, who may be considered and the trade-offs to discuss with a surgeon.

If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911 now. Do not use this form for urgent symptoms.

What it is

In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and connects it directly to a lower part of the small intestine, so food bypasses part of the stomach and upper intestine. This limits intake and changes digestive hormones and absorption.

Who may qualify

People who meet bariatric guidelines may be considered. Bypass is often discussed for people with significant acid reflux or type 2 diabetes, but the right operation depends on your health, goals and surgeon's judgment.

What recovery can look like

It is commonly done laparoscopically or with robotic assistance. Many people stay in the hospital one to two nights and follow a staged diet over weeks. Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements (such as B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D) and blood tests are important.

Risks to understand

Risks include bleeding, infection, leaks, blood clots, narrowing at a connection, internal hernias, dumping syndrome, ulcers and nutritional deficiencies. Further surgery is sometimes needed. Results vary and nothing is guaranteed.

Insurance and questions to ask

Ask whether bypass is a covered benefit under your plan, what prior-authorization steps apply, whether a supervised diet period is required and what follow-up care is covered.
