Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) in Los Angeles

What a sleeve gastrectomy involves, who it may suit, what recovery looks like and the questions to ask.

If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911 now. Do not use this form for urgent symptoms.

What it is

In a sleeve gastrectomy the surgeon removes most of the stomach and leaves a narrow, tube-shaped stomach (the "sleeve"). The smaller stomach limits how much you can eat at one time and lowers levels of some hunger hormones. The intestines are not rerouted. The removed part of the stomach cannot be put back.

Who may qualify

People who meet bariatric guidelines (see our overview) and who are ready to commit to long-term changes in eating and follow-up may be considered. Severe acid reflux or Barrett's esophagus can make a sleeve a poorer fit, so a reflux evaluation is often part of planning.

What recovery can look like

The operation is usually done with small incisions (laparoscopic or robotic-assisted) and often needs a short hospital stay. Diet advances in stages over several weeks. Your team will give specific limits on lifting and activity.

Risks to understand

Risks include bleeding, infection, leaks along the staple line, narrowing, blood clots and new or worsening acid reflux. Some people regain weight over time. Results vary and nothing is guaranteed.

Insurance and questions to ask

Ask whether your plan covers the sleeve specifically, what documentation is required (diet history, psychological evaluation, nutrition visits) and whether the facility and surgeon are in network.
